Joan Sowada: Why Do I Make Art?
(Zoom only)
About Joan:
Joan Sowada works in abstract conceptual, representational, and cartoon styles. No matter what style she is using, there are repeating themes explored: seasons of life, harmony, spirit, mending that which is torn, metamorphosis, response to world news, less is more, moments, relationships, imperfection, and feeling safe.
Her abstract conceptual pieces use a combination of commercial fabrics, recycled fabrics, and painted cotton and linen. These artworks have hand appliqué and a combination of hand and machine quilting. Representational pieces are created using fusing and machine applique and quilting. Her cartoon pieces can be more doodle than commentary.
Joan’s 2024 exhibits include SAQA “waiting”, Abstraction: Textural Elements, and a special exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show along with a solo show “Feeling Safe and Well” in Casper Wyoming. Joan has exhibited at international, national, and regional shows.
