Diana Fox Workshop: “Tree Rings”
February 22, 2025 (Saturday)
Registration opens: January 9, 2025 – 10:00am
Cost: TBD
Supply Fee: $25
Covid Restrictions: None at this time.
Diana Fox will lead us in a fun one-day workshop. Her unique approach to color design, piecing, and quilting will help you create a fabric tree ring.
Get ready to combine unique fabrics into round-ish blocks using raw edge applique to represent the growth of nature’s grandest marvels. Embellish and add detail with thread and your imagination. Finish by combining the blocks into unique, mounted wall art. Your supply kit will contain enough materials to complete a trio of rings.
Diana’s work has been recognized on a national and international level, with numerous pieces juried into shows and several successful solo exhibitions, including at prestigious institutions like the National Quilt Museum and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. She is a Juried Artist member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).
Tree Rings Supply List
- A sewing machine in good working order (oiled and cleaned) that you are familiar with. A free-motion foot, zig-zag foot, and straight stitch foot are essential. Please bring the manual for the machine, just in case!
- An assortment of threads in browns, black, and tan – neutrals in 40 or 50 weight. Brown and black are the most important because they will be used for the edging. I typically use Gutermann for this application but bring what you have and the thread that works with your machine. For example, Coats & Clarks won’t work in my machine.
- Cutting mat, rotary cutter, scissors. We will be cutting circles on the mat, and a “spinning” mat is nice but not required.
- Tweezers & seam ripper
- Straight pins
- Bobbins
- Note taking material
- Sewing machine needles. I typically use a 90/14 Quilting Needle, but different machines often prefer different needles. We will be sewing through multiple layers of fabric, interfacing, and felt. I’ve attached a section of a needle chart for reference. If you have a thicker quilting thread, you may wish to try a topstitch needle. However, a thicker thread is not needed for this application.
Needle | Purpose | Size | |
Quilting | Machine Quilting | 75/11 and 90/14 | Quilting needles feature a sharp, tapered point and are designed to stitch through thick layers and intersecting seams. Use them for piecing quilts and machine quilting the layers together. |
Topstitch | Topstitching | 80/12, 90/14 and 100/16 | Topstitch needles have an extra-large eye and a large groove to accommodate heavy topstitching thread or two strands of all-purpose thread. They also feature an extra-sharp point for straight, accurate stitching. |
- White batting or flannel to serve as your design wall.
- Phone for photos to show value differences
- Bring any other tools you typically use, as this list may not encompass all the items you commonly use in your practice.
Please let me know if you have any questions before the workshop. My email is hiitsdi58@msn.com. Looking forward to creating together. –Diana Fox
