Vicki Conley Workshop – “Design from Photo to Imagination”
August 23 and 24, 2025 (Saturday and Sunday)
Registration opens: June 16, 2025 – 10:00am
Cost: TBD
Covid Restrictions: No restrictions at this time.
In this class Vicki will show how she uses multiple photos to design a bold, graphic landscape. She will demonstrate simplifying the images using a tracing technique with clear sheet protectors as well as the drawing app Procreate on the iPad.
Students will design their own pattern from their own photos. The finished pattern will be enlarged and traced on Floriani Stitch and Wash Fusible stabilizer. (Available from Vicki).
Vicki will discuss value and fabric selection and students will construct a simple rock pattern to learn turned edge machine piecing and fussy piecing techniques.
Vicki is moved by the wonders of the natural world. She creates both abstract and representational work. Having a background in the natural sciences has always caused her to look at things from that angle. Why do the birds act as a group? How is the mountain formed? What causes the orange crusty stuff? She is constantly imagining how she would reflect their beauty in her art.
Vickie uses machine piecing, both from designs drawn on stabilizer as well as improvisational piecing to capture the feeling of a place or event. The tactile nature of fabric and thread serves both spirit and concept.
